Macharaviaya is the birthplace of the illustrious Gálvez family and the birthplace of Bernardo de Gálvez, Viceroy of the Americas and hero of the American War of Independence. The municipality is twinned with Pensacola (Florida), which sends an official delegation every year to pay tribute to this historical figure, whose monument presides over the entrance to the village.
